In Later European and American Art, various theories and interpretations have been developed to help understand and appreciate the artworks. Some art was also difficult to understand immediately, such as The Two Friedas.
In the 18th century, the theory of the "sublime" emerged in art and literature, which emphasized the emotional and spiritual impact of art rather than its ability to imitate nature. This was prevalent during Romanticism.
In the 19th century, the theory of "expression" was developed, which held that art should express the inner emotions and experiences of the artist. This evidently influenced the development of the Expressionist movement in art.
In the later 20th century, post-modern theory of art, which questions the idea of what art is, and the role of artist and viewer.
